How to solve

Sudoku Tips for Beginners

Sudoku looks like a math puzzle, but there's no arithmetic at all, it's pure logic. The goal is simple: fill the grid so every row, every column, and every 3×3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9, with no repeats.

Start where it's easiest

Scan for rows, columns, or boxes that are already nearly full. The fewer empty squares, the fewer choices, and often only one number can go in a given cell. Fill those in first to build momentum.

Two techniques that do most of the work

  • Scanning: pick a number, then look across rows and boxes to find the one square in a box where it can legally go.
  • Pencil marks: in a tricky cell, lightly note every number that could fit. As you solve nearby cells, cross options off until one remains.

Golden rules

  • Never guess, every puzzle can be solved by logic alone.
  • If you're stuck, switch to a different number or a different box.
  • Work in pencil so you can adjust without frustration.

Practice at the right level

Our large print sudoku books start gentle and build gradually, one roomy grid per page, the perfect place to practice. Newer solvers or kids can start with the easy 4×4 and 6×6 grids in our Sudoku for Kids.
